Genetics & Metabolic GI Disease
This module builds a systematic framework for recognizing, investigating, and counseling families about monogenic and metabolic gastrointestinal disorders, from congenital diarrheal disorders and very-early-onset IBD to glycogen storage diseases and hereditary polyposis syndromes. Given the higher consanguinity rate in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, particular emphasis is placed on autosomal recessive congenital GI disease, genetic counseling, and practical consanguinity-based recurrence-risk assessment.
Pediatric Endoscopy & Procedures
A procedurally focused curriculum covering pre-procedure assessment, sedation and anesthesia, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic technique, and endoscopy unit safety in children, mapped to SCFHS logbook minimums (F1 20 EGD/10 colonoscopy/5 sigmoidoscopy; F2 30/15/5; F3 30/20/5; ≥2 DOPS per year) and NASPGHAN/ESPGHAN endoscopy training standards.
Pediatric Esophagus & Stomach Disorders
A comprehensive fellowship module covering infant regurgitation and pathologic GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal motility disorders, Helicobacter pylori infection, peptic ulcer disease, caustic and foreign-body injuries, and the major congenital anomalies of the pediatric esophagus and stomach.
Pediatric GI Emergencies
A comprehensive, time-critical curriculum covering the recognition and initial management of gastrointestinal emergencies in children — from GI bleeding and intussusception to malrotation, caustic and button-battery ingestion, acute liver failure, severe colitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and the acute abdomen.
Pediatric GI Nutrition
A comprehensive review of pediatric gastrointestinal nutrition spanning growth assessment, infant feeding, malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, enteral and parenteral nutrition, pediatric obesity/MASLD, and intestinal failure/short bowel syndrome, mapped to the SCFHS Pediatric GI fellowship written-exam Nutrition blueprint.
Pediatric GI Surgery Liaison
A co-management curriculum for the pediatric gastroenterologist working alongside pediatric surgery — covering Hirschsprung disease, anorectal malformations, malrotation/volvulus, necrotizing enterocolitis, short bowel syndrome, biliary atresia/Kasai portoenterostomy, IBD surgery, and the long-term GI sequelae of gastroschisis, omphalocele, and esophageal atresia repair, with emphasis on the referral pathway rather than surgical technique.
Pediatric Liver & Metabolic Disease
This module provides comprehensive training in pediatric hepatology, covering the systematic evaluation of neonatal cholestasis, biliary atresia, inherited cholestatic and metabolic liver diseases, viral and autoimmune hepatitis, pediatric acute liver failure, portal hypertension, and the principles of pediatric liver transplantation.
Pediatric Pancreatic Disease
A focused review of pediatric pancreatic disorders spanning acute, acute recurrent, and chronic pancreatitis, hereditary and genetic predisposition, cystic fibrosis-related pancreatic insufficiency, congenital anomalies, exocrine insufficiency, pseudocysts, autoimmune pancreatitis, and nutritional management, mapped to the SCFHS Pediatric GI fellowship written-exam Pancreas blueprint.
Pediatric Small Bowel & Colon Disorders
A comprehensive fellowship module covering the diagnosis and management of pediatric small bowel and colonic disease — celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, functional GI disorders, Hirschsprung disease, chronic diarrhea, food-protein allergic disorders, and polyposis syndromes. This is the single largest category in the SCFHS Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition Fellowship written-exam blueprint, weighted at 28%.
Research, Biostatistics & Ethics
A practical curriculum equipping pediatric GI fellows with the study-design literacy, basic biostatistics, critical appraisal skills, and research-ethics grounding needed to consume, conduct, and report clinical research responsibly, including the specific regulatory and cultural context of research ethics in Saudi Arabia and the GCC.
