IBD Masterclass 2026 opened the day of its main scientific programme with a Hands-On IBD Research Workshop at Crowne Plaza Riyadh RDC, taking 40 residents, fellows and specialists from a local research question through to a mentor-reviewed, one-page research concept.

IBD Masterclass 2026 opened the morning of Friday, September 11, at Crowne Plaza Riyadh RDC with the Hands-On IBD Research Workshop, run immediately ahead of the two-day main scientific programme at the same venue and capped at 40 participants — senior internal medicine residents, GI and IBD fellows, GI specialists and gastroenterologists.
The workshop opened with Prof. Majid Al Madi on why local IBD research matters and the limits of extrapolating from international cohorts, followed by Prof. Mahmoud Mosli on building a sustainable, research-optimised local IBD registry, Dr. Mohammed Nabil Quraishi on generating real-world evidence from question to publication, and Dr. Mohamed Shehab on systematic review, meta-analysis and network meta-analysis in IBD — one talk illustrating evidence appraisal with a worked example from the shared decision-making literature, comparing physician- and patient-recalled accounts of the same consultation.

Participants then split into five to six small groups of seven to eight, each assigned a faculty mentor, and worked through a structured checklist — research question (PICO), local rationale, study design, primary outcome definition, sample and feasibility, the top two threats to validity, and ethics pathway — to draft a one-page research concept grounded in a real local IBD question.
The hands-on session closed with brief group pitches — question, design, and biggest open concern — and one round of faculty feedback per group, before closing remarks brought the workshop, and the pre-conference day, to a close.
With intestinal ultrasound and nutrition covered in Thursday's pre-conference workshops, the research workshop gave residents and fellows dedicated, hands-on time to turn a local clinical question into a concrete research concept — closing out the pre-conference day just before IBD Masterclass 2026's main scientific programme opened at the same venue.
